SCF Seeks Alternative to Mike Rounds in South Dakota
ALEXANDRIA, VA — Following today's news that U.S. Senator Tim Johnson
(D-SD) is expected to retire next year, the Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) announced that it will not support former Governor Mike Rounds
for the Republican nomination in South Dakota and is actively looking for a conservative alternative. SCF Executive Director Matt Hoskins made the following statement:
"Now that Senator Johnson is retiring, the door is wide open for Republicans in South Dakota to elect a true conservative. We're working with our members in the state to find a candidate who will fight for limited government in the U.S. Senate.
"We already know that we won't be able to support Mike Rounds because his record is too liberal. As Governor, Mike Rounds raised taxes, increased the state's bureaucracy, supported President Obama's stimulus program, and backed bailouts for Wall Street banks.
"South Dakotans overwhelmingly rejected President Obama last year, causing him to lose the state by 18 percentage points. These voters deserve a chance to send a principled conservative leader to the U.S. Senate.
"If the grassroots in South Dakota get behind a strong challenger, SCF will seriously consider supporting that candidate against Mike Rounds in the Republican primary. This race is too important to concede it to another moderate politician who won't fight for limited government."THE ROUNDS RECORD
Republicans in South Dakota have a right to know that Mike Rounds:
- Expanded state bureaucracy by 1,500 employees
- Supported higher cigarette, alcohol, and telephone taxes
- Supported higher Internet taxes
- Supported Medicare Part D prescription drug entitlement
- Supported the TARP bailout program for Wall Street banks
- Supported Obama's "stimulus" spending
- Supported the fiscal cliff deal, raising taxes on 80% of Americans
- Refuses to rule out raising federal taxes in the future
The Senate Conservatives Fund is a grassroots organization that helps elect true conservative leaders to the U.S. Senate. Over the past two elections, SCF raised over $25 million and helped elect eight new Senators — Pat Toomey (R-PA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rand Paul (R-KY), Mike Lee (R-UT), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and Deb Fischer (R-NE).
