GOP Leaders Work Against Stenberg

Posted By: U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, Chairman

Republicans in Washington are working against a popular conservative candidate, and we must take immediate action to stop them.

The New York Times reported last week that Republican leaders in the Senate are trying to recruit Gov. Dave Heineman to run against conservative Don Stenberg in the Republican primary race for U.S. Senate in Nebraska.

This comes just weeks after the Senate Conservatives Fund endorsed Stenberg and raised over $100,000 for his campaign.

This recruitment effort is troubling for several reasons.

First, it threatens Don Stenberg, a proven conservative who is already leading incumbent U.S. Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) in the polls. Gov. Heineman is a good guy, but by his own admission his heart is not in this race, and he's definitely no Don Stenberg. In fact, the Cato Institute recently gave Heineman a "C" grade in its 2010 scorecard because he supported too much spending.

Second, it ignores the wishes of the grassroots in Nebraska and all across the nation, which have lined up solidly behind Don Stenberg. Freedom-loving Americans know Stenberg is the one candidate in this race who will stand up to the big spenders in both parties.

Third, it violates the pledge made by GOP leaders to stay out of Republican primaries in the 2012 elections. As you know, the Washington establishment worked to defeat grassroots-backed candidates like Pat Toomey (R-PA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Mike Lee (R-UT). Their efforts ultimately backfired and they vowed not to make this mistake again.

If you recall, the establishment said our candidates were too conservative to win. They were wrong then and they're wrong now. Don Stenberg is a steady, effective leader who has won several statewide elections in Nebraska.

As Americans who believe it's time to elect principled leaders to the U.S. Senate, we must take immediate action to build support for Don Stenberg's grassroots campaign.

The Senate Conservatives Fund has invested nearly $200,000 in Stenberg's campaign as a result of donations from thousands of members like you. This is a great start, but we need to do much more. That is why I'm writing to ask you to help us invest another $100,000 over the next week so we can help Stenberg win this critical race.

Please take a stand for freedom today by making a contribution of $25, $50, $100, or any amount up to $5,000. We've overcome the establishment's efforts to sideline our candidates before, and I'm confident we can do it again.
