McConnell Surrenders the Budget

Tuesday, September 20, 2016

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is preparing to give in to the Democrats yet again.

According to several media reports, McConnell is preparing to cut a deal on the Continuing Resolution (CR) that increases spending, rewards his corporate cronies, and creates a lame-duck session after the election.

Specifically, the CR:

  • Spends a total of $174 billion over the budget caps set in 2013;
  • Expands cronyism by allowing the Export-Import Bank to finalize deals over $10 million that it currently can’t approve; and
  • Funds the government for only 10 weeks so Congress can do even more harm in a lame-duck session after many lawmakers have been voted out of office and during the holidays when few are paying attention.

And what about all of the conservative riders that Republicans could have added to stop funding for the Iran nuclear deal, the Syrian refugee program, sanctuary cities, Planned Parenthood, and Obamacare?

All of those priorities have been surrendered.

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) bragged to reporters yesterday about how GOP leaders were “dropping all of their riders.”

Of course, what Schumer really means is that they’re dropping “conservative” riders. Liberal riders like the one that benefits the Export-Import Bank will almost certainly survive these negotiations.

TAKE ACTION

There are two things you can do to make your voice heard.

First, sign the national “Ditch Mitch” petition urging Senate Republicans to replace Mitch McConnell with a Republican leader who will honor his oath to support and defend the Constitution.

Second, call Senate Republicans and urge them to oppose the CR that will be coming up for a vote this week.

While many of these senators are campaigning right now against liberal policies, they’re surrendering on those same policies in DC. It’s time for them to keep their promises when it matters.

Thank you for making your voice heard.
