Democrats Fail to Stop Betsy DeVos

Wednesday, February 8, 2017

The Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education yesterday after Vice President Mike Pence cast the tie-breaking vote.

The vote followed an all-out effort by Senate Democrats to sink the nomination. The fact that they chose to spend most of their energy working to defeat a nominee for one of the least powerful cabinet positions shows just how controlled they are by the teacher’s unions.

Betsy DeVos committed the unforgivable sin of judging our education system based on its results and working to improve it by offering parents the choice of charter schools and vouchers.

School choice is a direct threat to the public education monopoly that produces loads of campaign money for Democrats. The last thing liberals want is an education secretary who promotes more choices for parents and more opportunity for children.

It’s also worth noting that two Republicans – Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) – joined every Democrat in opposing the DeVos nomination. They caved under pressure from the unions and gave credibility to the Democrats’ opposition.

If you want to express disappointment in their votes, call Senator Collins at (202) 224-2523 and Senator Murkowski at (202) 224-6665.

Thank you for making your voice heard and for doing so much to fight for the principles of freedom that make America great.
