Tom Cotton Leads Fight Against Amnesty

Thursday, January 18, 2018

As Democrats and liberal Republicans seek to use the threat of a government shutdown to force President Trump to agree to a liberal amnesty deal that does nothing meaningful to improve border security and reform our immigration system, one senator is standing tall.

Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) has shown much-needed leadership on this issue and has taken the fight directly to the liberals in both parties who want to further weaken border security.

In response to the Democrats’ campaign for amnesty, Cotton said, “So Democrats are now threatening to shut down the government if they don’t get amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants. Let’s see how that works out for them … in places like WV, IN, MO, ND, & MT.”

To those who are critical of the border wall, he said, “Of course walls work. Those who say ‘walls don’t work’ really mean ‘walls work … they reduce illegal immigration & I don’t want that.'”

And in response to the amnesty deal cut between the Democrats and pro-amnesty Republicans like Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ), Cotton said, “Might as well roll it straight into the trash can … mass amnesty far beyond DACA, fake border security, no end to chain migration.”

Tom Cotton’s willingness to take the fight to the other side and to support President Trump’s effort to enact true border security stands in stark contrast to the actions of Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

Instead of putting a good bill on the Senate floor and daring the Democrats to kill it, McConnell is refusing to consider anything until the president agrees to some version of amnesty. “I’m looking for something President Trump supports,” McConnell said, “and he’s not yet indicated what measure he’s willing to sign.”

This, of course, is completely false.

The president has made it clear that he wants immigration reforms to (1) end the visa lottery, (2) stop chain migration, and (3) build a wall. The problem is that Mitch McConnell doesn’t want to even try to pass these policies without amnesty.

Please call Senator Tom Cotton at (202) 224-2353 to thank him for his leadership in fighting for true immigration reform.

Also, please tell your congressman and senators to fund the border wall and to defund sanctuary cities.

These are two spending priorities that should be part of any funding bill passed by a Republican-controlled Congress.
