Anti-Infanticide Bill Fails Senate Vote

Wednesday, February 27, 2019

The Senate voted to block the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act this week. While 53 senators voted to advance the measure, it needed 60 votes to break the Democrats’ filibuster.

Given how radical the Democrats have become, I’m rarely shocked by their actions anymore. But to see all but three Senate Democrats vote in favor of infanticide was surprising. This isn’t a partisan issue; it’s a matter of basic human rights.

But we conservatives need to be honest with ourselves about the Republican record on these issues too.

While a majority of the Senate voted in favor of this bill, it’s very unlikely that it will ever become law because Republican leaders in the House and Senate aren’t willing to do what it takes to pass it.

This isn’t fun to talk about, but it’s the truth.

While we may get more “show votes” on this issue, which are designed to create political problems for the Democrats, we won’t see Republicans take real steps to actually break the Democrats’ filibuster and get this legislation signed into law.

Sadly, many Republican leaders are simply unwilling to fight for our principles if it requires anything more than a drive-by vote here or there. They expect us to seal-clap for them holding a vote, and to ignore the countless times they failed to deliver results.

We thank Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) for sponsoring this legislation and for pushing it to a vote, but now it’s up to him and other pro-life leaders to pass this bill and to defund Planned Parenthood so our tax dollars are not being used for to pay for abortion.

That means not walking away. It means doing what it takes to break the filibuster. It means fighting for pro-life amendments on must-pass bills that are going to be signed into law. This is what Americans want. They’re saying, “Don’t tell me that you’re conservative. Prove it.”

It’s this kind of backbone and resolve that the Senate Conservatives Fund supports and it’s what we will continue to fight for in supporting principled candidates for the U.S. Senate.

Thank you for being part of our team. With your support, we will help the Senate move beyond posturing and deliver real results.
