"Show Vote" on Planned Parenthood

Monday, August 3, 2015

Today, the U.S. Senate will vote to bring up S. 1881, the Defund Planned Parenthood Act, for debate. Unfortunately, this bill won’t be signed into law even if it manages to get the 60 votes required to overcome a filibuster.

The vote today is a drive-by, show vote.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) scheduled the vote to make it look like he’s serious about this issue before the August recess, but he has no plans to seriously fight for it.

In fact, rather than keeping this issue on the Senate floor this week and elevating the Democrats’ opposition by making them vote on it again and again, he plans to quickly move on to a cybersecurity bill.

Also, rather than threatening to cancel the August break if the bill isn’t passed – something Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) did often – McConnell plans to take the month off while Planned Parenthood uses our tax dollars for abortions.

If the Majority Leader were serious about protecting taxpayers and the unborn, he would have supported the defund amendment offered by Senator Mike Lee(R-UT) to the “must-pass” highway bill last week rather than blocking it.

He would make it clear that the new Republican Congress will not, under any circumstance, fund Planned Parenthood this year. Instead, when asked about whether the continuing resolution (CR) might include Planned Parenthood funding, McConnell ducked the question.

It’s clear that the Republican leader in the Senate won’t do what’s necessary to stop funding for Planned Parenthood unless the grassroots increase the pressure and expose his failure to govern responsibly.

TAKE ACTION

There will be a vote to defund Planned Parenthood today and most Republicans will support it, but the real test is whether they will oppose any bill that funds the organization. If they won’t rule out funding it, then they’re just posturing and plan to betray their principles later this year.

Again, the real question isn’t whether they will vote for a bill that defunds Planned Parenthood; it’s whether they will oppose any bill that funds it.

Please help us finally put an end to taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood by calling the Senate Republicans today.

Tell them that you’re glad there will be a vote on this today, but you know this bill isn’t going to be signed into law. Tell them that you want them to oppose the “continuing resolution” (or CR) if it funds Planned Parenthood.

Please ask the staff person who answers the phone if the senator will pledge to oppose and filibuster any bill that funds the organization.

If they say they can’t block funding because it will lead to a government shutdown, ask them why they aren’t willing to risk a temporary shutdown of the non-essential parts of our government in order to stop tax dollars from being used to abort unborn children and then sell their bodies for profit? The Democrats are willing to risk this for their liberal agenda.

If Republicans aren’t willing to take a stand against this evil, then they have lost their way and should be defeated in their next election.

Thank you for your support. We’ll keep fighting.
